Begin with a flight to Semera, then venture deep into the Afar region’s salt flats, volcanic craters and mineral fields. Swim in Lake Afdera, trek at sunset to Erta Ale’s glowing lava lake and camp under the stars. On Day 2 explore Hamed Ela and Lake Asale’s buoyant salt pools. On Day 3 hike Dallol’s neon sulfur springs before returning to Semera for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
Detail Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Domestic Flight to Semera
Fly Bole→Semera (ET 110, 07:10–08:30), meet your guide and drive into the Afar salt plains with coffee breaks and a scenic lunch. Swim in Lake Afdera then head to Erta Ale. Camp at the volcano base and trek at sunset to its glowing lava lake.
Overnight: Camping at Erta Ale
Day 2: Explore the Salt Plains & Sunset at Lake Asale
Drive to Hamed Ela and cross the salt flats. Lunch under desert palms, then float in Lake Asale’s buoyant waters and watch the sunset over white salt fields. Return to camp.
Overnight: Camping at Hamed Ela
Day 3: Dallol’s Alien Landscapes & Back to Semera
After breakfast, hike among Dallol’s neon sulfur springs, salt geysers and mineral formations. Return to Hamed Ela for lunch, then drive back across the salt flats to Semera for your flight to Addis Ababa.
